Lets start all simple like.
Kids like:
Bright colours.
Ghastly of engaging? One thing all kids entertainment has in common is its all bright and vibrant to keep there small attention spans switched on.
Simple characters.
We dont want a De Niro esk performance from any character we might use. Barney didnt win and oscars, and kids lapped his prancing about right up.
Funny noises.
MEEP MEEP!!! The jovial and silly traits that come through in the characters and images extend to the audio too.
Slapstick humor.
You cant spell Dick and Dom without Dick. In my book these are silly silly men. However, kids love them, why? Because they muck about being naughty and throwing slime on people. Classic.
Repetitiveness.
The same episode of 'Blues Clues' was played everyday each week, with no changes. Kids didn't mind, they loved it in fact, because they saw new things in it each time and liked the safety of knowing what was going to happen. (see Malcolm Gladwell, Tipping Point)
Songs.
The sing-a-long, made famous by Sesame street, capitalized on the face that kids long songs, and joining in, and learning. Its the audio equivalent of a drawing book. Most kids shows have songs, but all have loud, vibrant, upbeat jingles to welcome the kids.
Cartoons.
Kids like cartoons. Fact.
Because they combine all these child friendly factors into one irresistible package of childish fun.
